Pothole in a Concrete Driveway: Repair Without Breaking It Out

A small pothole in a concrete driveway can be repaired in place: the loose material comes out, the hole is rebuilt with a suitable repair material, and the driveway is recoloured in two coats so the patch blends in. That holds only if the slab around it is sound. A hole that goes through the slab or sits over a washed-out base is a different, deeper problem.

What counts as a pothole we can repair?

We repair potholes that are confined to the surface of an otherwise solid slab. These are the shallow hollows where the top of the concrete has broken up, the chipped pockets beside a gate track, and the spots where a corner of the surface has crumbled away.

The test is what lies underneath. If you can see sound, hard concrete at the bottom of the hole and the slab does not flex or rock around it, it is usually a surface repair.

  • Shallow holes in driveway surfaces.
  • Broken pockets where the wearing layer has come away.
  • Damaged spots where vehicles turn or brake.
  • Holes left by removed posts, fixings or old fittings.
  • Small breakouts next to drainage channels and thresholds.

When does a pothole mean the base has failed?

A pothole is a base problem when you can see soil, gravel or a void at the bottom, when water collects and disappears into it, or when the concrete around it moves. Patching the top of that kind of hole does not last, because the support beneath is gone.

A hole over a washed-out or soft base is not fixed by surface repair. The cause has to be investigated and put right first, which is outside our service.

If the edges of your driveway have dropped near the hole, or there is a pattern of sinking, read our guide on when concrete repair is not enough before you book anyone. It explains what usually needs to happen first.

How is a pothole in a concrete driveway repaired?

The repair starts with the whole driveway being pressure cleaned, because repair material bonds poorly to dust and old dirt. The hole itself is then cleared of anything loose, so only hard, sound concrete remains.

Next, the hole is rebuilt with a repair material suited to outdoor concrete and to the depth of the damage, following that product's data sheet. Once the repairs are done and any cracks nearby have been treated, the edges are cut in by brush and the full area receives two coats of synthetic resin paint.

Why recolour the whole driveway after a pothole repair?

A rebuilt patch will never match the colour and texture of a faded slab on its own. Coating only the patch draws the eye straight to it.

When the whole driveway is recoloured in two coats, the repaired area, the old cracks and the sun-bleached patches all end up under one uniform finish. That is what turns a repair into a driveway that looks looked after.

Do potholes usually come with other damage?

Often, yes. The forces that wear a hole in one spot tend to leave cracks and flaking around it, and a hole near a joint is often linked to the joint breaking down.

That is why we look at the whole surface in your photos, not just the hole. Cracks are handled on our concrete crack repair page, flaking surfaces on spalling concrete repair, and open joints on expansion joint repair.

Can a driveway pothole be fixed while your villa is empty?

Yes. Holes in a driveway tend to get noticed by a property manager or a guest rather than by the owner, and the repair can be arranged entirely in writing. Ask whoever is on site to take the photos we need and send them to us by email or WhatsApp, in English if you prefer.

We confirm whether the hole is a surface repair, quote the job and agree dates that suit your bookings. When the work is done, we can send photos of the finished driveway so you can check it from home.

Can you repair a pothole in a communal driveway?

Yes, if the community has approved the work. A shared driveway or garage ramp is usually a common element, so the request normally comes from the administrator or the president.

Under the Ley de Propiedad Horizontal, works needed for the proper upkeep of common elements are compulsory and do not need prior agreement of the owners' meeting, which only decides how the cost is shared. Your administrator will know how this applies to your building.

What affects the price of a pothole repair?

The number and depth of the holes, the total area to recolour, and access all play a part. One small hole on a short drive is a very different job from several breakouts on a long, sloping entrance.

See the quote and price page for how our pricing works, then send us photos so we can quote your driveway.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fix a pothole in a concrete driveway without replacing it?

Yes, as long as the hole is confined to the surface and the slab around it is sound. We clear out loose material, rebuild the hole with a suitable repair material and then recolour the whole driveway in two coats so the patch is not obvious.

What if the pothole goes right through the concrete?

Then it is not a surface repair. A hole through the slab usually means the base underneath has failed or washed out, and that needs to be investigated and put right first. Base work and new concrete are not part of our service, and we will tell you that up front.

Why did a pothole appear in my concrete driveway?

Common causes are a weak top layer, repeated turning or braking in the same spot, water getting into cracks and breaking the surface down, or an object that was fixed into the slab and later removed. A soft or washed-out base underneath is the cause that matters most.

Will the repaired pothole be visible?

On its own, a patch always shows. That is why we recolour the whole surface after repairing it. Under two even coats the patch blends into the rest of the driveway, although on textured or patterned surfaces a slight difference can sometimes be seen up close.

How soon can I drive over the repaired area?

That depends on the repair material, the coating and the weather. We follow the product data sheet and tell you before we start when the driveway can be walked on and when cars can go back on it, rather than quoting a fixed time.

Can you repair potholes in imprinted concrete?

Small breakouts in imprinted concrete can be rebuilt, but the stamped texture cannot be reproduced exactly in a repair. After recolouring, the repaired area usually blends in well from normal viewing distance. Our imprinted concrete repair page explains what to expect.

Do you fill potholes with tarmac or asphalt?

No. We work on concrete and imprinted concrete surfaces, and potholes in those are rebuilt with materials suited to concrete. Asphalt road surfaces, tarmac patching and resurfacing are not part of what we do, so for an asphalt drive you would need a different contractor.

What photos help you quote for a pothole?

A close-up of each hole with a coin or tape measure for scale, a photo showing what is at the bottom of the hole, and a wide shot of the whole driveway. Add the approximate square metres and mention if water collects in the hole or drains away into it.

Can a single pothole be repaired without recolouring?

It can be filled, but it will stand out against the faded surface around it. To make the driveway look whole again, our service combines the repair with a two-coat recolour of the area. We can discuss the options when we see your photos.

Do you repair potholes in car parks or commercial sites?

We repair existing outdoor concrete surfaces, including car parks, as long as the work is surface repair and recolouring. We do not do line marking, space numbering, industrial warehouse floors or asphalt, so for those you would need a different specialist.

Is a pothole repair covered by my community of owners?

If the pothole is in a common element such as a shared driveway or garage ramp, it is generally a matter for the community, and necessary upkeep works do not need prior agreement of the owners' meeting under the Ley de Propiedad Horizontal. Check with your administrator.
